Mastodon is an open-source, decentralized microblogging platform built on the ActivityPub protocol, operating as part of the broader interconnected Fediverse. Instead of relying on a centralized corporate server or algorithmic timeline, Mastodon functions across thousands of independently hosted, community-governed servers (instances) where users publish 500-character text posts, images, polls, and video updates displayed in strictly chronological feeds.
For social media marketing, Mastodon provides a direct-to-audience communication channel free from ad auctions and feed-ranking suppression. Open-source projects, tech organizations, media outlets, and independent creators run dedicated instances or verified accounts to distribute product announcements, engage in topic-specific community discussions, and link verified web domains directly to their profile metadata.
Marketing teams and publishers use SMM panels on Mastodon to establish immediate account volume and overcome cold-start limitations on newly joined instances. Because Mastodon relies on manual discovery, hashtag indexing, and federated relay distribution rather than algorithmic promotion, early boost and favorite velocity helps posts gain visibility across both local server timelines and the wider federated network.
The Mastodon services offered through SMM panels include instance profile followers, post boosts (re-shares), favorites (likes), custom replies, and poll votes.
